Western Wildlands Route
Admin Jun 17, 2024“The 2,700-mile Western Wildlands Route (WWR, formerly known as the Wild West Route) offers bikepackers a non-technical riding experience through the vast expanses of wild and public lands in the Intermountain West. Nearly 70% of the route is on public lands - 18 National Forests, 6 National Parks and Monuments, and 4 areas with Bureau of Land Management National Conservation Lands designation.”, according to Bikepacking Roots. This route took us 12 days, 8 hours, 40 minutes, and 9 seconds of cycling time to cover 4312 km (2679 miles), including 47660 m (156372.46000000002 ft) elevation gain, with an average speed of 15 km/h (9 mph), reaching a maximum speed of 63 km/h (39 mph) on Saturday, June 1, 2024. During cycling, there was a minimum temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) on Thursday, May 30, 2024, and a maximum temperature of 50 °C (122 °F) on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Admin Sep 12, 2022“The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is Adventure Cycling’s premier off-pavement cycling route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide in southern Canada and the U.S. This route is defined by the word “remote”. Its remoteness equates with spectacular terrain and scenery. The entire route is basically dirt road and mountain-pass riding every day. In total, it has over 200,000 feet of elevation gain. Nearly 2,100 miles of the route is composed of County, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Canadian provincial unpaved roads.”, according to the Adventure Cycling Association.

Day 12: An ‘easy’ day
EvE Aug 12, 2022Today we rode from Helena, Montana, US to Basin, Montana, US. Sunny weather with clouds, a few drops, and thunderstorms surrounding us at the end of the day. Road conditions were brutal (gravel, lots of difficult jeep tracks). Highlights of the day include the scenery, the difficult tracks, and concurring the 3rd pass of this day. Riding statistics: on Friday, August 12, 2022, day 12 on the route, it took 09:30h (06:40h moving time), between 10:37 and 8:08, to cover 68.73482 km (42 miles), including 1672 m (5486 ft) elevation gain, with an average speed of 10.0 km/h (6.2 mph), while reaching a maximum speed of 49 km/h (30.4 mph). During this ride the average temperature was 31 °C (88 °F) with a minimum of 21 °C (70 °F) and a maximum of 44 °C (111 °F).

EvE Aug 11, 2022Today we rode from Lincoln, Montana, US to Helena, Montana, US. The day started with mist, however, within two hours it was full on summer again with high temperatures. Road conditions included a few paved roads, lots of different gravel roads, but also lots of difficult double track / jeep track. Highlights of the day include climbing 3 passes that crosses the North American Divide, the changing scenery, and checking into our first motel..

EvE Aug 10, 2022Today we rode from Seeley Lake, Montana, US to Lincoln, Montana, US. Clouded day with sometimes a bit of sun, 10 drops of rain. Road conditions included gravel roads, paved roads, jeep tracks, lots of washboarding. Highlights of the day include sceneries from the passes, changes in scenery between forests and farmland, clouds. Riding statistics: on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, day 10 on the route, it took 10:16h (07:28h moving time), between 7:55 and 6:11, to cover 111.24043 km (69 miles), including 1284 m (4213 ft) elevation gain, with an average speed of 15.0 km/h (9.3 mph), while reaching a maximum speed of 47 km/h (29.2 mph). During this ride the average temperature was 29 °C (84 °F) with a minimum of 16 °C (61 °F) and a maximum of 48 °C (118 °F).

EvE Aug 9, 2022Today we rode from a dispersed campsite, Montana, US to Big Larch Campground at Seeley Lake, Montana, US. Very sunny weather again with little to no clouds. Road conditions included much gravel roads, some jeep tracks, some paved roads, and some single track. Highlights of the day include getting out of a long forest road and see the mountain scenery again, and a single track downhill near the edge of the mountain.

Road conditions include paved roads, and different types of gravel road. Highlights of the day include a dog. Riding statistics: on Monday, August 8, 2022, day 8 on the route, it took 10:57h (07:58h moving time), between 7:32 and 6:30, to cover 114.14151 km (71 miles), including 1527 m (5010 ft) elevation gain, with an average speed of 14.0 km/h (8.7 mph), while reaching a maximum speed of 42 km/h (26.1 mph). Riding statistics: on Saturday, August 6, 2022, day 6 on the route, it took 09:36h (07:59h moving time), between 8:27 and 6:03, to cover 98.98257 km (61 miles), including 1615 m (5299 ft) elevation gain, with an average speed of 12.0 km/h (7.5 mph), while reaching a maximum speed of 45 km/h (28.0 mph). During this ride the average temperature was 24 °C (75 °F) with a minimum of 15 °C (59 °F) and a maximum of 46 °C (115 °F).
